A Thyroid Scan is a special type of nuclear medicine imaging procedure used to assess the activity and function of the thyroid gland. A tiny, safe amount of radiotracer (such as Technetium-99m or Radioactive Iodine I-131) is administered and naturally absorbed by thyroid tissue. A sensitive gamma camera then captures high-resolution functional images of the gland.
